Why You Shouldn’t Bother Visiting Carmarthenshire

Why You Shouldn’t Bother Visiting Carmarthenshire

People often ask us why on earth we relocated 300 miles to live in a county most people have never even heard of. Looking around at the local landscape, it’s easy to see why people don’t tend to bother visiting Carmarthenshire.
If you’ve been planning a weekend getaway or a quick mid-week escape to West Wales, consider yourself warned.

The Views Are Completely Ruined by History

If you prefer your horizons flat, cross Carmarthenshire off your list. Rolling green valleys and dramatic hillsides are completely ruined by all the… well, the ruins. Who wants a medieval castle fortress sitting atop a craggy cliff breaking up a perfectly good view of the countryside? It’s a total eyesore.

The Beaches Leave a Lot to Be Desired

If your idea of a coastal escape involves crowded piers, amusement arcades, and fighting hundreds of strangers for a square inch of sand, our coastlines are going to disappoint you terribly. The local beaches leave a lot to be desired, assuming what you actually want is a crowd. Instead, all you’ll find here are endless miles of pristine golden sand, wild rock formations, and completely undisturbed shorelines. You could quite easily die of boredom.

The Rush Hour Traffic Is Shocking

If you thought motorway traffic was bad back home, just wait until you see the morning rush hour here. Your main delay will likely involve a massive flock of local sheep taking over a narrow, hedge-lined lane, being ushered by a dog of all things, or a herd of cows heading back to the farm for milking. It’s an absolute nightmare if you like to get somewhere in a hurry.

There’s Nowhere Decent to Eat

After a long day of dealing with empty beaches and quiet countryside lanes, you’d think you could at least find a regular fast-food chain or a boring chain restaurant, I’m afraid not. Instead, you’ll just find historic country inns and those so-called hidden culinary gems, where you’re forced to choose between Welsh beef or steak and even worse, Welsh lamb and fresh, locally sourced dishes and fine wines served in cosy, candlelit dining rooms.

As For the Accommodation…

Then there’s the issue of where to stay. Apart from a few quiet hotels in local market towns, most options are tucked away in the countryside. Such as our cabin. It’s just stuck out in the middle of a river-fronted field, with nothing but the sound of trickling water and the local wildlife. Drive anyone mad. To make matters worse, we even expect you to use an outdoor bath that’s sunken into the deck. Who on earth wants to soak in an outdoor tub at sunset, or crawl into a bed surrounded by fairy lights and rustic wood panels? What on earth were we thinking?

The Nightlife Certainly Has No Atmosphere

Don’t expect any nightlife here either. Once the local pubs shut, that’s it. It just gets completely dark, zero street lighting, and we even turn the cabin festoon lights off at 11pm to save electricity. So, you’re just left with a few lanterns and absolutely nothing to look at but a load of stars. Brilliant.

Ready to Risk a Visit Anyway?

If you’re willing to risk a few days here anyway, whether that’s for a mid-week reset or a weekend escape, our cabin is the perfect place to just disappear.

You run a very real risk of facing total peace and quiet.
