The Seasons at Erwain Escapes: A Year of Calm

At Erwain Escapes, we don’t measure time by the clock, but by the shifting light on our riverfront meadow and the changing colours of the valley. Each season brings its own unique rhythm, offering a different kind of quiet for those looking to switch off and enjoy a peaceful getaway in West Wales.

Whether you’re drawn to the first spring blooms or the crackle of a winter fire, here is how the seasons move through the landscape at our secluded Carmarthenshire retreat.

Spring: Light returning and small signs of change

Spring is when many of us feel that sudden pull to get away. It is about remembering what it feels like to be outside again: not just rushing from A to B but actually standing in the air and dreaming of those sunnier, brighter days ahead. At Erwain Escapes, the valley comes gently back to life alongside you.

The days are stretching out, and the light lingers just a little longer each evening. You’ll notice the first shoots of green appearing and the birdsong sounding a little bolder.

Staying in West Wales during the spring is perfect for those who want a genuine reset. It is a time for slow mornings, woodland walks to find the first wildflowers at Dinefwr or Dinas Nature Reserve, and watching the spring lambs finding their feet across the valley. It is the best time of year for returning to the cabin to simply sit and watch the light change, or for curling up with a book as the afternoon sun begins to stream through the glass.

Summer: Long days and meadow life

Summer at the cabin is lived outdoors. The meadow is in full bloom, and the riverfront becomes the perfect place for a long, lazy afternoon. It is the season for noticing the small details of nature: the hum of bees, the flash of a kingfisher, and the scent of sun-warmed grass.

As the sun begins to dip, the Nook becomes the heart of the evening. It is the perfect spot for BBQs and starlit suppers, followed by the ritual of the firepit as the dark skies emerge.

This is the time for truly slow living: an afternoon nap in the hammock lulled by the sound of the river, or a long soak in the outdoor bath as the twilight settles over the trees. Summer at Erwain Escapes is about the luxury of time and the joy of a secluded Welsh getaway.

Autumn: The golden hour

As the air turns crisp, the valley shifts into copper and gold. Autumn is a real transition season: it’s for those who still just want to be out in the fresh air. It is a great time for Forest and local trails or hiking across the Brecon Beacons and then getting back to the cabin to light the fire. There is something really satisfying about the contrast between the cold air outside and the warmth of the wood burner.

This is when we get those big “golden hour” afternoons where the low sun hits the long grass. It’s also probably the best time of year for the outdoor bath, especially when it’s just starting to get dark and the air is cool. Whether you’re in the reading nook or out on the deck with a cuppa and a blanket to take the chill off, autumn here is just about slowing down and taking in the change of pace in Carmarthenshire and across West Wales.

Winter: The ultimate retreat

When the frost settles on the meadow, the cabin feels like a real sanctuary. Winter is for deep rest: it’s about the steam rising from the outdoor bath on a cold night, the weight of a woollen blanket, and the valley at its quietest. If you need to truly disappear for a few days, winter is the time to do it.

The nights are at their darkest now, which is perfect for stargazing from the deck before heading back inside to the fire. There is no pressure to be doing anything. Staying here during the winter months is just about hunkering down and enjoying the silence of the West Wales countryside.

Whatever time of year you choose to visit, the landscape will have a different story to tell.

We look forward to sharing a piece of our valley with you.
